Exiting Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is preparing himself for an emotional day when he signs off at Anfield on Saturday against Crystal Palace.

The 34-year-old former England international midfielder will bow out in front of the Merseyside faithful after making more than 700 appearances for his one and only club to date.

The plan is to try and keep it together and avoid the tears.

And Gerrard, who will move to the United States to join the LA Galaxy in the summer, is hoping to go out on a high on what he expects to be a tricky occasion at Anfield.

He told reporters: “I want to win and finish on a high at Anfield. There’s no getting away from it, it will be emotional. I dreamed of playing for this club as a boy and now I’m 708 appearances down the line.

“I don’t know how emotional it will be. I don’t know what it’s going to be like. I’ve been dreading it because I’m going to miss it so much.

“The plan is to try and keep it together and avoid the tears.

“If someone had said when I was going to the academy at eight years old that you’re going to play 708 games and win the trophies, along with the highs and lows, I’d have taken that.”

The 114-times capped schemer can be backed at 2.60 to score at any time against the Eagles and is 4.00 to be the first goalscorer for his side, while Gerrard is 6.50 to net the final goal of the game.

Gerrard, who can be backed at 66/1 to score an own goal on his Anfield finale, has won almost every major medal on offer during his time with Liverpool, helping the club to Champions League, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and League Cup glory, although the Premier League title eluded him.

His final outing for the Reds is likely to come a week on Sunday when the Merseysiders head to the Potteries to take on Stoke City to round off their Premier League campaign.
