Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is confident that Jordan Henderson will blossom in the role of club captain, following the summer departure of Reds legend Steven Gerrard.
The 25-year-old England international schemer moved to Anfield in the summer of 2011 from Sunderland and has developed into a key player for the Merseysiders.
And Rodgers is more than content to hand Henderson the armband which had been worn for so many years by Gerrard.
He told the club’s official website: “When I was aware that Steven was going I wanted to look at somebody who would be a great ambassador for Liverpool on and off the pitch. You have a huge responsibility on a worldwide basis.
“Jordan was one I thought about and once I saw him grow and develop as vice-captain, I felt sure he could be a captain.
“I told him to do it his way and have his own ideas and I think he’ll have an outstanding year and really blossom with the captaincy.”
Meanwhile, Rodgers is happy that his squad will have more firepower for next season, with Danny Ings already signed from Burnley and Christian Benteke reportedly close to joining from Aston Villa.
He told the Echo: “It was clear we needed to score more goals.
“A few years ago we needed to improve our goal tally and we did that and it gave the team a little bit of profit. I feel it was the same this summer, we were down on our goals.”
Liverpool, who finished sixth in the table last season, are 3.75 to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League next term, with Tottenham 7.00 and Manchester United 1.25.
