Southampton head coach Ronald Koeman believes that Manchester United may have paid too much to land PSV Eindhoven forward Memphis Depay.
The 21-year-old Netherlands international joined the Red Devils in a deal worth in excess of £25million and Koeman is certain that Depay will take some time to come close to justifying such a price tag.
I have learnt while I am here in England, that Dutch players can’t make the jump to the top of the Premier League easily.
He told the Mirror: “I think they paid a lot of money. Because it is United, where they already spent £200m on players like Angel di Maria, such a big figure is put in perspective.
“If you pay millions for Di Maria, who hardly plays, if you pay a fortune in wages and rent (loan) fee for Radamel Falcao, who never plays, then £25million is not a lot of money for them.
“He won’t play every game. I have learnt while I am here in England, that Dutch players can’t make the jump to the top of the Premier League easily. And young players can’t play 38 games anyway.”
United finished in fourth place in the Premier League last season to qualify for the Champions League, while the Saints ended in seventh and will play in the Europa League.
And Koeman has already been busy in the summer transfer market, bringing in Portuguese defender Cedric Soares from Sporting Lisbon and Spanish striker Juanmi from Malaga.
Southampton can be backed at 1.28 to finish in the top half of the table next season and are 15.00 to secure a top-four finish, while they are available at 26.00 to win the Europa League.
