Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says it is important the club put in a strong finish to the season in order to have momentum going into the new campaign in August.
Defeat to Crystal palace on Monday meant City remained nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea having played a game more than Jose Mourinho’s team.
Three defeats in five league games also means City have dropped below derby rivals Manchester United ahead of Sunday’s showdown at Old Trafford.
According to Kompany, it will be a good time for City to cross Manchester.
“It’s the perfect place for us to go and try to rectify what we’ve had.”
He added: “A derby is a derby. It doesn’t matter what place you are in the league, it’s a derby.”
City are 2.87 to win Sunday’s game, with United 2.50 and the draw 3.30.
Their recent stuttering form means City are 51.00 to retain their Premier League crown but the Belgian international insists they have to regain some focus and give themselves some momentum for next season in the process.
“My only concern is we get back to our best form,” Kompany said.
“I think it’s our general form that we have to improve. I’ve learnt from the past seasons as well that finishing a season strongly can have an impact on your next season as well.”
Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini has come in for plenty of criticism during their recent struggles but both the Chilean and his squad can take confidence from the fact they have emerged victorious on their previous three visits to Old Trafford.
Man City are now 1.50 to finish above their neighbours United this season, with Louis van Gaal’s team 2.50.
