Brendan Rodgers wants Liverpool focused after European exit

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says his players must get over their Europa League exit and stay focused on the race for a top four finish and FA Cup glory this season.

The Reds were knocked out on penalties by Besiktas in Turkey on Thursday and now face Premier League champions Manchester City at Anfield in Sunday’s lunchtime kickoff.

Rodgers is focusing on the positives now that Liverpool have no further European commitments with their reduced schedule allowing them to sharpen their preparations for each game between now and the end of the season.

“We want to be in those competitions and the Champions League consistently for the next number of years but there is no doubt with that out of the way, and after next week’s game against Burnley we will go to nearly one game a week, which probably for the first time this season will give us chance to prepare every aspect,” Rodgers said.

Liverpool got the better of Manchester City in a five-goal thriller when the sides met at Anfield last season and it is 1.61 that both teams will score in Sunday’s game.

Rodgers insists Liverpool’s European exit means his squad can now focus on the “bigger picture”.

The bigger picture for us is the Premier League and the FA Cup were our priorities, so that is still the case. Between now and the end of the season we will give everything to achieve our objectives

“The bigger picture for us is the Premier League and the FA Cup were our priorities, so that is still the case. Between now and the end of the season we will give everything to achieve our objectives,” he added.

Liverpool are 3.10 to defeat City and keep up their recent strong run that has seen the Reds win seven of their last nine Premier League games.

After cutting the deficit on league leaders Chelsea to five points by hammering Newcastle at the Etihad last weekend, City can further trim that gap with Jose Mourinho’s side in League Cup action this weekend.
