Everton boss Roberto Martinez admits his team have not lived up to expectations this season but is confident they can put that right in the future.
With seven games left to play this season, the Toffees are 12th in the Premier League with little to strive for after an inconsistent campaign.
Having challenged for a top four finish and qualified for the Europa League last season, Martinez’s men have found the going tough this time around and were, for a time, involved in a relegation scrap.
While three straight wins have all but ended their fears of going down, Martinez has still had to face criticism over his handling of the team.
The former Wigan and Swansea boss says he has learnt a lot about his Everton side this season and feels that they will not make the same mistakes they have this term in future campaigns.
“It has been a very strong learning curve,” said the Spaniard.
“Obviously, we have enjoyed our European experience and we are a completely different team than we were at the beginning of the season.
“We don’t shy away from the expectations, and it is something that we are going to use in a good way, to become a winning team.
“Our history demands success and this season has been finding the right balance between realistic expectation and being able to be ourselves on the pitch.
“With people like that, you are really looking forward to finding solutions and being successful. I think this season we showed that we are ready to face challenges head-on and we are really excited about the future.”
With the season drawing to a close, Everton are 2.75 to continue their recent good run and finish in the top half of the Premier League table.
Martinez says the focus for now is on having a strong end to the season, starting with Saturday’s trip to Swansea.
“Obviously, we have got seven games left in the league and we are very much concentrating on how many points we can get from now until the end of the season and finishing really strong,” he added.
Everton are 2.90 to win at the Liberty Stadium this weekend, while the Swans are 2.37 and the draw 3.30.
