Everton manager Roberto Martinez says that his side fully deserved their 3-0 win over Manchester United, a result that takes them into the top half of the Premier League table.

First half goals from James McCarthy, John Stones along with a late strike from Kevin Mirallas gave the home side all three points against United who stay fourth and, despite two successive losses, remain favourites to ensure Champions League qualification for next season.

After the game a delighted Martinez said: “I thought we were well worth a three-goal lead and that speaks volumes.

“To keep the concentration for 90 minutes and keep a clean sheet was magnificent. It showed an incredible mentality and that is something that we have learned in a hard season.

“It has been a big demand to be in Europe and the domestic competitions and I think that there has been a mental fatigue from that.”

His side went ahead inside the first five minutes at Goodison Park, McCarthy scoring on a breakaway after United enjoyed early possession.

They doubled their lead on 35 minutes, courtesy of a header from defender Stones who outjumped Antonio Valencia to nod home.

As United’s challenge petered out, Mirallas made the game safe for the Toffees, the visitors defence at fault as he ran and hit a low shot past David de Gea in the United goal.

The result means that, after being in relegation trouble earlier in the campaign, Everton’s season continues to improve.

They have been unbeaten at home in 2015 and have now won five of their last six Premier League games, a run that taken them up to 10th in the table.

Everton travel to relegation-threatened Aston Villa in their next game where they are 2.60. Villa are 2.62 and the draw is priced at 3.30.

United meanwhile, after two away defeats, have a home game against West Brom next Saturday.
