Manuel Pellegrini has been promised funds for “high quality” signings from Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak following their disappointing season.
The Chilean tactician has been given the backing of the City hierarchy despite the Citizens finishing the campaign without any silverware as Chelsea took their Premier League title and Newcastle and Middlesbrough ended their Capital One Cup and FA Cup hopes respectively.
City were also dumped out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage by Barcelona for the second successive campaign with a second-placed league finish the only positive.
I can assure you the squad will be stronger, the team will be more competitive. I am both confident and excited about what is coming next year.
Khaldoon Al Mubarak
Khaldoon has now broken the silence from the club’s money men by revealing that owner Sheikh Mansour is happy with the “great nucleus” of the team which they are looking to keep intact, but he is “aiming much higher” in the future.
As a result there will be funds made available to Pellegrini to bolster the squad, although Khaldoon insists it will not be on a par with the sort of spending which heralded the Sheikh’s takeover in 2008, while some of the current squad are set to be offloaded.
He told City TV: “We want a squad that is able and has the capability and quality to win the Premier League, compete and win the Champions League, compete and be able to go all the way in two cup competitions in England.
“I think you will see some changes. You will see some players who have served us well and maybe it is time for them to move to their next challenge, and you will see us in the market bringing high-quality individuals that fit within what we are aspiring to coming in this summer.
“I can assure you the squad will be stronger, the team will be more competitive. I am both confident and excited about what is coming next year.”
Khaldoon is also adamant that the top players in the world have looked at City’s progress in recent seasons and want to join the club for success and not just a big pay-packet.
He added: “We can compete head to head with all the top clubs and players look at the track record of Manchester City over the last couple of years, look at the City Football Academy, the facilities we have, the infrastructure we have, look at the people we have in terms of management and coaches, look at the environment we have created here in Manchester. We have a very attractive proposition.”
City are 3.75 to win the Premier League in 2015-16, while they can be backed at 15.00 to win the Champions League.
