Manuel Pellegrini has said he will make the necessary changes to ensure Manchester City usurp champions Chelsea next season.
The Chilean’s own future has come under scrutiny in recent weeks and reports suggested Pep Guardiola had verbally agreed to join the north-west giants – a claim the Spaniard refuted when insisting he will stay with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
“We are not a selling team. Sergio is very happy here. I think he is one of the top five players in the world. He’s improved.”
Big-spenders City will end this season trophyless and with speculation about some of the club’s senior players, such as Yaya Toure, ramped up.
Pellegrini, who is under contract until 2016, said he would not be asking his paymasters to sanction wholesale changes this summer and suggested he will only be making minor tweaks to his squad.
“Next year, we must make some changes but I don’t think we are very far from Chelsea or from other teams,” he told reporters.
“I think it is important to try and work as soon as you can but to try to work in the correct way.”
Pellegrini also moved to kill speculation leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero could be sold in the summer. The Argentina international has scored 31 goals in 40 matches in all competitions this season and has been linked to La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Pellegrini said he had no plans to offload the former Atletico Madrid favourite and promised to keep hold of the club’s star assets.
“We are not a selling team,” he said. “Sergio is very happy here.
“I think he is one of the top five players in the world. He’s improved.”
