Manuel Pellegrini aimed a thinly-veiled swipe at Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho by suggesting Manchester City won the Premier League title last season “in another style”.

The north-west giants surrendered the title to the capital club on Sunday when a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace saw Chelsea crowned champions with three games still to play.

“Maybe Chelsea are more consistent this year and they won the league but we scored more when we did it.”

The west Londoners have been subjected to chants of “boring” in recent performances and Pellegrini said he felt his players won the title last season with more swagger.

“It is important for the fans to play attractive football. We did exactly the same that Chelsea did this year, but we scored 158 goals last year,” he told reporters.

“We scored more goals in another style.”

City (71) have scored more goals than Mourinho’s men (69) so far this season and a 1-0 win against Tottenham on Sunday thanks to a goal from Sergio Aguero effectively secured a Champions League place.

Last season City scored 102 goals during their title-winning campaign as Chelsea settled for third place behind runners-up Liverpool.

“This team continues as the most scoring team,” Pellegrini added. “That side is important, to continue winning in that sense.”

City’s failure to win a major trophy this season has led to speculation the Chilean could lose his job at the Etihad Stadium.

When asked if he will still be in charge next season, he said: “I’m not going to answer that question.”

He added: “I think it’s important to finish as near the top as possible and see where we need to improve. Maybe Chelsea are more consistent this year and they won the league but we scored more when we did it.”

Manchester City host relegation-threatened QPR next and are priced 1.22 in the match betting. The draw outcome is quoted 6.50 and the visitors are on offer at 11.00.
