Manuel Pellegrini insists Manchester City’s title hopes are not over despite Sunday’s disappointing 2-1 defeat at Liverpool.
The loss leaves City five points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea and they have now played one game more than Jose Mourinho’s side.
It was a particularly galling loss for last season’s champions as Liverpool had had to travel to Turkey on Thursday for their Europa League tie at Besiktas, which they eventually lost after extra-time and a penalty shoot-out.
You never know in football what will happen.
However, when asked whether City’s chance to retain their Premier League title had gone, Pellegrini replied: “No. Not in the spirit.
“I think we never give up about the title. We must try to improve our play first and after that try to win our next game.
“You never know in football what will happen. It is more difficult when you have less games and you continue with the same points but I don’t think the team can think about that. The team must think about how we can win the next game.”
The defeat means City are only four points clear of third-placed Arsenal, five points ahead of Manchester United in fourth, and just seven points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool.
Mnachester City are 8.50 to beat Leicester City 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday with Sergio Aguero available at 1.61 to score at any time against the Foxes.
