Brendan Rodgers says his aim is for Liverpool to be stronger and more competitive in the new season even though Raheem Sterling is set to join Manchester City.
Rodgers has confirmed that Sterling will sign for Manuel Pellegrini’s side in a £49million deal, subject to a medical being passed, after the England international rejected a £100,000-a-week contract offer to remain at Anfield.
After finishing second in the Premier League table in 2013/14, Liverpool could only clinch sixth spot last term when they missed the goals of Luis Suarez, who was sold to Barcelona 12 months ago, and Daniel Sturridge, who was injured for a large proportion of the campaign.
Contrary to what has been written, Raheem and I have always remained strong in our relationship.
This summer, Rodgers has signed Joe Gomez, Robert Firmino, James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan and Nathaniel Clyne, while Brad Jones, Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Sebastian Coates, Iago Aspas, Javier Manquillo, and now Sterling, have all left the club.
Rodgers is happy with his transfer dealings in the last two months, and insists he has no problems with Sterling leaving Merseyside, saying: “Contrary to what has been written, Raheem and I have always remained strong in our relationship. There is no issue there.
“Our aim is to be stronger and more competitive next season.
“Transfers are not really something I want to go into in a press conference. I spent a lot of last season talking about transfers and don’t intend to this year.
“Any business done will be done behind the scenes at the club.”
Liverpool are 2.30 to beat Stoke City in their first Premier League game of 2015/16 season on Sunday 9th August, and are 3.75 to finish in the top four.
