Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is confident that his side can mount a sustained challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The Red Devils recovered from a slow start to eventually finish in fourth place last season, with head coach Louis van Gaal beginning to stamp his authority on the Old Trafford squad as the months passed.
The most important thing is that as a squad we believe we are close to challenging for the title.
And England striker Rooney is confident that with a couple of quality additions, United can be genuine title contenders in 2015/16.
He told his own personal website: “I honestly believe we will go far next year and won’t be far off challenging for the league.
“If you look at the first 10 to 11 games (last season), we only had around 13 points and if you look at where we finished, I think it shows we could have been up there with a better start.
“We’ve dominated and outplayed most teams, but haven’t taken our chances to win those games – it could have been a different story if we had.
“The most important thing is that as a squad we believe we are close to challenging for the title and with a couple of signings in the summer we will have a good chance of doing that.”
By finishing fourth in the league last term United secured a place in the play-off round for the Champions League – just one tie away from the lucrative group stage.
And the Red Devils can be backed at 6.00 to win the Premier League next season, with Manchester City 3.75 and holders Chelsea 2.50.
