Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney believes that his side can challenge for the Premier League title next season, having signed four new players so far this summer.
The Red Devils secured fourth place last term despite a slow start to life under new head coach Louis van Gaal and Rooney is expecting better next term following the arrivals of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian.
Can we challenge for the title? Yes, I think so.
He told reporters: “Obviously with the four new players coming in, there is a lot of excitement within the squad. They are four very good signings, four quality players.
“Can we challenge for the title? Yes, I think so.
“At times last season, we were very good in some of the big games and that added quality will help us be a bit more consistent and it will give us a real chance at the title.”
Meanwhile, Rooney is hoping to be given a full season in an out-and-out attacking role and he is determined to weigh in with his share of goals for United.
He added: “I hope to score 20 or more goals again this season. If I am playing as a striker, I will be disappointed if I cannot that do that.
“With the quality we have brought into the squad and the numbers we have brought in, the manager has options in midfield, so there shouldn’t be a need to play there.”
Rooney can be backed at 17.00 to be top goalscorer in the Premier League next season, with Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero 4.00 and Chelsea frontman Diego Costa 6.00.
