Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney has admitted it was vital his side secured a top-four finish last season as they look to challenge in Europe once again.
The Red Devils managed to hold off challenges from both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to secure that final Champions League spot.
United will now have a chance to qualify for the Champions League group stages, having not had any European football at Old Trafford last season.
Rooney has now spoken of the importance of their final Premier League position and hopes the club can now push on under manager Louis van Gaal.
He told the club’s official website: “Top four was a must, really.
“We had to get ourselves back into the Champions League and we’ve managed to do that. Hopefully that will provide a springboard for us to go and fight for silverware next year.”
United are 6.00 to win the Premier League next season, while Chelsea are 2.37 to retain the English crown.
