Tim Sherwood is delighted that Fabian Delph will be staying at Aston Villa and says the former Leeds United star is a vital part of his squad.
The England international had been linked with a transfer to Manchester City, 3.75 to win the 2015/16 Premier League title outright, but said at the weekend that his immediate future was at Villa Park.
It had been reported that City would sign the midfielder for £8million after activating a buy-out clause in his contract and the rumours intensified when Delph did not travel with the rest of the Villa squad for a pre-season training camp in Portugal.
He did not travel to Portugal because his wife is due their second child any moment.
However, Sherwood has set the record straight by saying: “We are looking to build something here and we’re looking to keep our best players.
“Fabian is certainly one of those. It’s just an example of the measure of the guy really that he decided to stay and I’m delighted to have him here next season.
“He did not travel to Portugal because his wife is due their second child any moment. That’s why he was always going to stay back.
“He had an opportunity to join Man City and he weighed up his options and decided to stay with us, which we’re obviously all delighted about.”
Villa can be backed at 3.50 to win their first Premier League match of the season on 8th August at Bournemouth and are 6.00 to be the top Midlands club in 2015/16.
