Tim Sherwood says he has signed Micah Richards from Manchester City because the 26-year-old has a winning mentality.
Richards won the Premier League title and FA Cup with Manchester City before being released earlier this month and has represented England on 13 occasions.
He spent last season on loan with Fiorentina and Sherwood thinks he will add some steel to a Villa side that were beaten by Arsenal in last month’s FA Cup final and also flirted with relegation for much of the campaign.
Micah is a winner and, at 26, we are getting him when he should be producing the best football of his career.
Sherwood said: “I’m really pleased to get Micah on board and I’m sure he will prove to be an excellent signing for the football club.
“Micah is a winner and, at 26, we are getting him when he should be producing the best football of his career.
“Micah has played international football for England in the past and, if he performs as well as I know he can for Aston Villa, then there is no reason why he can’t get back to that level again.”
Richards is currently out of favour with England boss Roy Hodgson having also failed to impress Fabio Capello during the Italian’s spell in charge of the national side between 2008 and 2012.
Villa are 2.87 to win their first Premier League game of the 2015/16 season at Bournemouth on 8th August and are 4.33 to secure a top-half finish next term.
