Manchester United defender Chris Smalling believes he is currently playing the best football of his career and wants to remain at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
The central defender has found favour with manager Louis van Gaal this season and is now forming a strong partnership with Phil Jones at the heart of the Red Devils defence.
Currently with the England squad ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Italy, Smalling told the media he is enjoying life at Man United.
“The manager has shown a lot of faith in me. Especially over the last couple of months, I have stayed fit, the manager has chosen me, and I am enjoying my football,” he said.
Smalling was an unused sub in Friday’s 4-0 win over Lithuania at Wembley but may be involved when the Three Lions meet Italy in Turin.
England are 3.25 to defeat Italy, who are 2.20, with the draw 3.30.
Manchester United are rumoured to be ready to offer Smalling, whose contract expires at the end of next season, a new deal and he says he is happy to remain at Old Trafford for as long as he is wanted.
“I am enjoying it, I have always enjoyed playing for United, especially at the minute,” he said. “If I can contribute, as now, then I am happy to stay as long as they want me.”
Victory over Liverpool at Anfield last weekend has put United in a strong position to secure a top four finish this season and they are now 1.25 to achieve that feat.
Smalling has paid tribute to van Gaal’s style of management.
“I think he is very honest. He says what you are doing very well and what you can improve. He has real belief in you,” he added.
