Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling says he wants to concentrate on playing football rather than the ongoing debate over his contract talks with Liverpool.
The England international has turned down Liverpool’s latest contract offer and the Anfield club are believed to be considering selling the 20-year-old this summer as a consequence.
Sterling says he will not be considering any new deal until the season is over and maintains he is not holding out for a big-money contract.
“It’s never been about money. I talk about winning trophies throughout my career. That’s all I talk about,” Sterling said in an interview with BBC Sport.
“I just want to focus on football and, when it gets to the end of the season, assess my position as a 20-year-old player playing in the Premier League.”
Sterling was a revelation for Brendan Rodgers last season, scoring nine goals in 33 Premier League appearances as the Reds came perilously close to winning the title.
Things have been tougher for both player and club this time around but Sterling remains a key component for the Merseysiders.
Ironically, Sterling admits he would have signed a long-term contract a year ago when Liverpool were battling for the title.
“If, at that point in time, I was offered a contract, I most definitely would have signed straight away, probably for far less money than being said now,” he said.
Liverpool are 4.20 to beat Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday where Sterling should return to club action. The Gunners are 1.83 with the draw 3.75.
Despite talk of him being unsettled Sterling says he is focusing on silverware and he is eyeing up a potential FA Cup win with Liverpool set to replay their quarter final with Blackburn next week.
“I want to win something at the end of the season and the FA Cup’s a great chance,” Sterling said.
Liverpool are 3.00 to win the FA Cup this season.
