Daniel Sturridge says Liverpool’s priority remains securing a top-four place this season despite boss Brendan Rodgers’ claim that second is up for grabs.

The Reds, who had to settle for runners-up last season when their impressive title charge finally stuttered in the last weeks of the campaign, are currently fifth in the table.

I think top four is definitely possible for us.

Rodgers’ side are chasing a top-four place and are just two points behind arch-rivals Manchester United, who are one position above them ahead of the big Anfield showdown between the two sides on Sunday.

Liverpool are 2.05 to see off United, who are 3.60 to win, while the draw is 12/5.

Sturridge says they are focused on finishing the season in the top four and not yet chasing second spot, despite Rodgers’ recent claims and the fact they are now only four points behind current second-placed Man City.

“It is important to secure fourth place and then from there look on,” the England international said. “To finish in the top four is realistic for us, it’s what we’re aiming to do, and if we can get higher than that then perfect.

“But finishing in the top four is the objective and that’s the most important thing for us. It’s not about aiming for anything other than that now.

“If we can finish in the top four, then we can push on and challenge for the title again next season.

“I think top four is definitely possible for us.”

Sturridge is now fit again after spending five months out recovering from thigh and calf injuries over the winter and he will be looking to add to his goal tally when United visit this weekend. The former Chelsea man headed the winner in the corresponding fixture last term.

Rodgers must decide whether to start club captain Steven Gerrard in the game as he is now fit following a month out with a hamstring injury, while fellow midfielder Lucas Leiva is also back in full training following a six-week spell out.
