Sunderland have snapped up Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates on a permanent deal after the Uruguayan impressed during a loan spell with the club last season.
The 24-year-old has penned a four-year deal with the Black Cats and moves to the Stadium of Light for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £2million.
Coates spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Sunderland and played a key role in the club’s move away from the relegation zone in the closing weeks of the campaign.
The central defender has spent the summer on international duty with Uruguay at the Copa America.
Sporting director Lee Congerton said: “Sebastian was an important part of the team under Dick Advocaat last season and we are delighted that he has joined us on a permanent basis.
“He has Premier League experience, which is important and, after spending last season on loan with us, he will be able to settle into the team very quickly.”
Coates joined Liverpool from Nacional in the summer of 2011 but struggled to break into the first team at Anfield.
Sunderland are 3.00 to be relegated from the Premier League in 2015/16 and 4.00 to win their first match of the campaign at Leicester City on 8th August.
