Dick Advocaat kept Sunderland in the Premier League last season.

Celtic defender Adam Matthews has moved south of the border to Sunderland for a transfer fee of £2million after spending the last four years in Scotland.

The 23-year old full-back has signed a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

Head coach Dick Advocaat said: “We know that we need quality players to improve competition for places in the side, so Adam is a welcome addition to our squad and we are very pleased to welcome him to Sunderland.”

Matthews began his career at Cardiff City and made 40 league appearances for the Bluebirds before moving to Celtic in the summer of 2011.

He scored four goals in 101 league games for Celtic, helping the Hoops clinch four Scottish Premier League titles in a row, while he has also established himself in the Wales team.

Sunderland are 3.00 to be relegated from the Premier League in 2015/16 and 4.00 to win their first match of the campaign at Leicester City on 8th August.
