In barren weeks having to admit to meagre returns can be rather humiliating, so please forgive me for shouting from the rooftops when things go my way.
They certainly did just that last weekend, as four of my selections delivered at pleasingly plump prices. Benik Afobe, Christian Benteke and Antoine Griezmann all hit the target, while Carlos Tevez was a first goalscorer as predicted.
A £10 accumulator on that little lot would have returned a whopping £1444.10 and you would now be flicking through the Thomas Cook catalogue with the world at your mercy. Still, the full house of five correct Goalscorer Gamble picks remains as mythical as any Yeti or Loch Ness monster, so it’s with enthusiasm rather than than complacency that we approach this week’s selections.
Starting in the Premier League, there’s a London derby which will have a crucial bearing upon the relegation battle. QPR can conceivably climb out of the drop zone if they can beat struggling West Ham. The Hammers have only won two Premier League games from 14 appearances in 2015, as they end the season in the sort of form so common for mid-table clubs with nothing to play for,
They’re the perfect opponents for a side needing a win. QPR’s recent results against West Brom and Aston Villa have given them a shot of securing safety and top scorer Charlie Austin was on target in both games. Austin now has 17 goals this season and is decent value at [2.5] to add to his tally.
Another English striker who’s has a great season in the Premier League is Harry Kane. This weekend Kane and his Spurs side travel to Southampton and the reputation of the home side has sent his price soaring.
In truth, Southampton’s home form has been far from perfect of late. They have won their last three games at St Mary’s but prior to that run were without a home win in five games.
With Tottenham being the fourth best away side this season and Kane having scored regularly on the road, the odds of [7.2] for him to grab the first goal look appealing.
It’s not often that we extend our stay in the Premier League to three matches but it’s a league so full to bursting with in-form strikers at bargain prices that this third selection cannot be ignored.
Christian Benteke has delivered for us over the past two weeks at huge prices and he’s once again available at large odds. The reason is the opposition that he’s been facing. The likes of Spurs, Liverpool and now Manchester City, have all been heavy favourites against Benteke’s Villa side.
What the odds ignore however, is that all three teams have pretty dodgy defences. City have only kept four clean sheets in their last 14 appearances, while Villa have scored in all but one of their last eight games. With Benteke scoring nine goals from his previous matches, the [4.5] on offer cannot be ignored.
While we’re keeping faith in players that produced in recent weeks, it would be hard not to extend the courtesy to others. Serie A top scorer Carlos Tevez has been a valuable source of income all season and despite Juventus having reached the Champions League semi-finals, there is zero danger of them slacking off.
Juve are honing in on another title and this weekend face local rivals Torino. A win will take them one step closer and 18-goal Tevez is likely to be available at around [5.0] to once again open the scoring.
Antonoine Griezmann is also becoming a reliable goalscorer for us and there’s no sign of this stopping when Atletico take on Elche. Diego Simeone’s side suffered Champions League heartbreak this week but are likely to get back to winning ways against their 14th placed opponents.
Griezmann has now broken the 20 league goal barrier for the first time in his career. Six of those goals have come in his last four league games and we’re tipping him to continue that run at [2.0].
Best Bet: Back Austin to score at [2.5]
Back Kane to score first at [7.2]
Back Benteke to score at [4.5]
Back Tevez to score first at [5.0]
Back Griezmann to score at [2.0]
