Manchester United head coach Louis van Gaal is confident that there is plenty more to come from ‘developing’ England international defender Phil Jones.
The 23-year-old former Blackburn Rovers youngster has put pen to paper on a new contract which ties him to the Old Trafford club until the summer of 2019.
Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time.
And Van Gaal is pleased to have been able to extend Jones’ deal, telling the club’s official website of the 17-time capped defender: “We are delighted that Phil has signed a new contract. He is a talented footballer with great versatility and can play in a number of positions.
“Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time. He missed some of last season due to injury, but I was impressed by his professionalism and attitude during those periods.”
Jones joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2011 for a fee in excess of £16million and has since racked up more than 120 appearances in all competitions, despite a number of injury problems.
And the player himself is delighted to have agreed fresh terms with United, adding: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to continuing my development as a player.
“This a great club to be part of and I cannot wait to start the new campaign.”
United overcame a slow start to finish in fourth place in the Premier League last season, their first under the charge of vastly experienced Dutch tactician Van Gaal.
They can be backed at 1.25 to finish in the top four again next term and are 6.00 to be crowned champions, with deadly rivals Manchester City 3.75.
