Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United have no chance of winning the Premier League this season even after they had eased to a 3-0 win against Tottenham.

However, the Dutchman believes United can now catch stuttering Manchester City and has not given up hope of clinching second spot in the table.

United produced one of their best displays of the season to brush Spurs aside, scoring all their goals in the first half before easing off after the interval.

The performance was very good against a very good team so I am very pleased.

They are now fourth in the table and, with nine games to go, are one point behind Arsenal in third place and two adrift of Manchester City in second position. However, United are eight points behind leaders Chelsea, who drew 1-1 with Southampton on Sunday and are 1.071 to win the Premier League outright.

Van Gaal said: “We have waited a long time for such a victory. The performance was very good against a very good team so I am very pleased. Maybe it is the game that gives us a fantastic boost.

“We have to go step by step though. It is a rat race and we are now two points from the second position but the first position is eight points and so that is too far away.

“The next game is Liverpool and Manchester United have not won too often recently in Liverpool.”

United are 3.20 to win at Anfield on Sunday and 1.61 to secure a top-four finish this season.
