Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has declared himself fit for the Manchester derby after returning to training on Wednesday.
The Dutchman has not played for the Red Devils since damaging ankle ligaments during a 2-1 defeat to Swansea at the Liberty Stadium in late February.
He had been reported to be ready to return to the first team squad for last weekend’s home victory over Aston Villa but manager Louis van Gaal ruled his compatriot out 24 hours before that game, insisting he wasn’t fully fit.
Van Persie made his return to training with the first team on Wednesday however and afterwards he took the chance to confirm his well-being via Twitter.
“Back to training with the group today. Was a great session. Happy to be fit and able to play again. Looking forward to my next game!” was the van Persie’s verdict.
Things have changed dramatically for both Manchester clubs during van Persie’s absence.
Manual Pellegrini’s champions have all but relinquished their grip on the title with Chelsea now enjoying a nine-point advantage over City having played one game less.
A third defeat in five league games for the Citizens at Crystal Palace on Monday night means they will travel to Old Trafford a point behind their hosts in fourth place.
Man United are 2.50 to win Sunday’s game with City available at 2.87 and the draw 3.30.
Van Persie’s injury has allowed Wayne Rooney to return to a more conventional role as a centre forward and the England skipper has responded with three goals in his last four United appearances.
Man United are 2.50 to finish above Man City in the Premier League with season.
