Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat has hinted that Santiago Vergini will be recalled for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby clash against Newcastle United.
The defender is set to be handed his chance to impress as Wes Brown is sidelined for several weeks with the knee injury he sustained at West Ham United a fortnight ago.
The 35-year-old former Manchester United defender is out of contract in the summer and may have played his last game for the Black Cats.
Vergini has played a lot this season both at right-back and centre-back and he’s done OK in training this week.
Vergini replaced Brown at Upton Park and seems certain to play alongside captain John O’Shea at the heart of the Sunderland defence.
Advocaat said: “Wes’ injury is a big blow because you need that kind of experience. But he’s not here, so there’s no sense to discuss it.
“Vergini has played a lot this season both at right-back and centre-back and he’s done OK in training this week.”
Lee Cattermole is also set to return to the side after serving a two-game suspension, probably in place of Jordi Gomez.
Will Buckley could also feature after returning to training following more than two months on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Sunderland can be backed at 2.60 to win the derby on Sunday, with the draw 3.20. The Black Cats are available at 2.25 to be relegated this season.
