Patrick Vieira has batted off any criticism of Manchester City for their failure to win the Premier League title last season.
The former Arsenal captain is now City’s football development executive and he points to their record over the last four seasons as testament to the progress the club is making.
Man City had won two titles in three years before surrendering meekly to Chelsea last season and Vieira says they – like the other top clubs – will be hurting this summer.
If you analyse the last four years, it’s been more successful than anything else.
“The target of the football club is to always try to win the Premier League title,” he told ESPN. “You only have one team who can win it.”
“Chelsea won it last year, so that means United, City, Arsenal and Liverpool were not going to be happy, but I think what is important is to analyse the situation and analyse what the club has achieved in the past four years.”
Vieira is happy with the strides Man City have made domestically in recent seasons, the Frenchman taking the chance to remind people the club has not always dined on success and stating his belief they are well positioned to challenge next term.
“If you analyse the last four years, it’s been more successful than anything else. Don’t forget that four or five years ago, the club wasn’t at that level.
“I think the journey of the club so far has been fantastic and you just have to look at the players we have in our squad,” he said.
Man City are 3.75 to win the Premier League title next season, while Chelsea are priced at 2.50.
Vieira’s old club Arsenal are 5.50 following their strong end to last season.
