Arsene Wenger was satisfied with a draw away at Manchester United that leaves his Arsenal team in pole position to finish third in the table.
Coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Old Trafford, the Gunners remain two points ahead of United with a game in hand and will clinch third with a win at home to Sunderland in midweek.
We want to secure second or third and start on the front foot next season
Wenger said after the game: “They started stronger than us. We were not totally in there but in the second half we dominated completely. Unfortunately we couldn’t score a second goal but the chances were there.”
United, in their final home game of the season, took a deserved lead in the first half through Ander Herrera’s eighth goal of the campaign. However, they were unable to convert any other chances and were made to pay in the second half.
The visitors came back into the contest in the second half and were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Theo Walcott crossed into the box and the ball came off United defender Tyler Blackett and past Victor Valdes in the United goal.
Wenger said his side has made progress in games against their rivals in this campaign, adding: “It is important for us, compared to last season, to exist in the big games. I think we’ve done that.
“We were slow to start this season but I think we’ve made progress. We want to secure second or third and start on the front foot next season.”
Arsenal can conceivably take second place in the league if they win both their remaining games, against Sunderland and West Brom, though Manchester City, with a superior goal difference, realistically need just a point at home to Southampton to clinch the runners-up spot.
United finish off their season with a trip to Hull who need a win to stand a chance of avoiding relegation. The Tigers are 3.60 to win, United are priced at 2.00 and the draw is 3.60.
