Arsene Wenger hailed Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Liverpool at the Emirates, praising his players for a ‘focused and clinical’ display.
The Frenchman admitted the game had been an even affair right up until the moment full back Hector Bellerin gave the hosts a 37th minute lead.
Indeed, Liverpool could have been ahead had Lazar Markovic not spurned a glorious chance when he tried to square the ball to Raheem Sterling with only the goalkeeper to beat.
The Reds were made to pay in spectacular fashion as further goals from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez put the game out of Liverpool’s reach before the interval.
If you look at today and the number of goals we scored, it’s not a coincidence.
Jordan Henderson pulled one back from the spot but Emre Can was then sent off before Olivier Giroud continued his fine scoring run with a fourth Arsenal goal in stoppage time.
Wenger was understandably delighted afterwards.
“We had a strong start with big intensity, but they came back into the game and had a good chance before we scored. We were focused and clinical,” said the Arsenal boss.
Wenger says there is a high level of confidence within the squad right now, something he felt was reflected in the performance.
“If you look at today and the number of goals we scored, it’s not a coincidence,” he added.
Arsenal are 1.50 to defeat Burnley at Turf Moor in their next outing, with the Clarets 6.00 and the draw 4.33.
Despite moving above Man City into second spot, Wenger is playing down any chance Arsenal have of catching league leaders Chelsea.
“We need 100-per-cent results, and the only way to get that is to focus on the next one with everyone together. We need other teams to have a weakness.”
Arsenal are 1.28 in the betting without Chelsea and Manchester City market, with Man United now 3.50.
