Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has called on his side to emulate the Italy squad who won the 2006 World Cup by securing Champions League glory.
The Italian champions face Spanish giants Barcelona in next month’s Champions League final in Berlin and Allegri is confident they can land the trophy and complete an historic treble, having already claimed the Scudetto and Coppa Italia.
Juve trio Andrea Pirlo, Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Barzagli were all members of the 2006 World Cup winning squad and Allegri wants another Italian success story.
“It’s a final, we’re better off playing a one-off match,” Allegri said as he picked up the Enzo Bearzot award.
“We hope to repeat the achievement of the Azzurri in 2006. The game on June 6 is easy to prepare for, less so was the Coppa Italia final.
“This season has been extraordinary for Italian football, but the film is not over. Juventus are in the final in Berlin, but not just that, two teams [Fiorentina and Napoli] went close in the Europa League.
“The national team is doing well too, we don’t have to discard everything we’re doing in Italy, but work on positive things like infrastructure or the future of the kids.
“Serie A is not worse than other Leagues, it’s just different.”
Juve do have concerns over Barzagli ahead of the clash with the Catalan outfit as he has a torn thigh muscle, with the defender currently rated as doubtful for the European showpiece.
Juve are 3.25 to win the Champions League outright and Barca are priced at 1.36.
