Dedryck Boyata says Celtic’s job is far from done in their Champions League qualifier against FC Stjarnan, despite winning the first leg 2-0.
The Scottish champions got off to the perfect start in their bid to reach the group stages of Europe’s premier club competition, easily seeing off the Icelandic champions at Parkhead.
The Bhoys took the lead in the first half through debutant Boyata, the summer signing from Manchester City nodding the home side ahead.
Stefan Johansen then converted Stuart Armstrong’s pass to double Celtic’s advantage just after half-time and they could have been out of sight had they not missed several other chances.
Leigh Griffiths missed a penalty late on and manager Ronny Deila admitted after the game he had been frustrated with his side’s finishing having totally controlled the game.
“We created a lot of chances, we should’ve scored more goals but 2-0 is a good result and that should be enough when we get up to Iceland,” Deila told BBC Radio Scotland,” said Deila.
“We had five big chances in the first half, we should have at least one more goal there. I think we had opportunities to kill the game but that’s football.”
Boyata echoed his manager’s sentiments and said they can not afford to overlook FC Stjarnan in the return leg in Iceland next Wednesday.
“We could have killed the game early, but we still managed to score two goals and could have got more,” said Boyata, who failed to finish the game having left the field with cramp late on.
“But we all know this game is never over after 90 minutes. We have to go for 180 minutes and make sure we go through.
“We are confident. Playing away games is never easy but we have the better players and hopefully we can finish it off.”
Celtic start their Scottish Premiership season against Ross County on 1st August and are 1.16 to win the game. The visitors to Parkhead are 15.00 and the draw 7.00.
