Roberto Martinez has decided not to risk Kevin Mirallas in Everton’s Europa League clash against Dynamo Kiev on Thursday.
The 27-year-old Belgium international may not play until after the international break as the injury he picked up in last week’s last-16 first-leg encounter at Goodison Park is worse than was first feared.
Mirallas has not travelled with the rest of the Everton squad to Kiev after picking up a dead leg in the 2-1 victory against Dynamo seven days ago.
We need to be careful because he is a sprinter.
“Mirallas could not be risked,” confirmed former Wigan Athletic boss Martinez.
“It’s a bigger problem than we thought and it might impact on him for the internationals with Belgium. He got a dead leg in the first leg and it has not cleared up as we would have liked.
“We need to be careful because he is a sprinter. It is a big risk so we need to be careful.”
There is better news for Martinez about Aiden McGeady though as the former Celtic star has recovered from a knee problem.
On-loan winger Aaron Lennon is ineligible to play for Everton in the Europa League as he featured for parent club Tottenham earlier in the competition.
Everton are 1.53 to qualify for the last-eight and can be backed at 13.00 to win the Europa League outright.
