Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is set to win his battle to be fit to face Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final in the Camp Nou.
The Poland international suffered a fractured jaw and nose in the DFB-Pokal semi-final loss to Borussia Dortmund a week ago and seemed certain to miss the showdown with Barca on Wednesday evening.
I’m still optimistic and I believe we can go there and win.
However, with a protective mask in place, Lewandowski came through training unscathed on Monday and was given a big thumbs-up by team-mate Jerome Boateng.
He told the club’s official website: “I think he’s fit and very motivated, Robert has no fear. He’ll be used to the mask by the time of the match.”
Former Dortmund frontman Lewandowski has netted 22 goals already in his first season with Bayern, including five in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Bayern forward Thomas Muller has backed his side to try and secure victory in the Camp Nou, while also admitting that they face a truly outstanding side in Barcelona.
He told his club’s official website: “We’re quite aware that Barcelona are one of the best teams in the world.
“They’ve knocked two other great teams out of the Champions League, but I’m still optimistic and I believe we can go there and win.”
Bayern and Barca met in the Champions League semi-finals two seasons ago, when the German outfit overwhelmed the Catalans 4-0 in the Allianz Arena and 3-0 in the Camp Nou, before going on to lift the trophy by defeating Dortmund 2-1 at Wembley.
The Bavarians are 4.00 to secure a draw in Barcelona on Wednesday and are 5.50 to keep a clean sheet, with Bayern 2.37 to go on and reach the Champions League final.
