Daniel Sturridge could return when Liverpool take on Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley on Sunday, manager Brendan Rodgers has suggested.
The England striker was not risked for the routine 2-0 win against 10-man Newcastle United at Anfield on Monday because of a hip injury he sustained during last week’s 1-0 quarter-final replay win at Blackburn Rovers. However, Rodgers is keeping his fingers crossed the 25-year-old will be ready to face Tim Sherwood’s men.
“We’re going to fight until the very end. As we saw last year there can be a lot of changes.”
Brendan Rodgers on top-four hopes
“Daniel Sturridge was injured from the Blackburn game and he just wasn’t right for tonight. It’s his hip but hopefully he’ll be okay for the weekend,” he told reporters on Monday.
“I’ll probably know more in the week. He said he feels reasonably fine, so we’re hoping by the middle of the week we’ll have a good indication of where he’s at.”
Rodgers confirmed France defender Mamadou Sakho will not be involved when the Merseysiders head to the capital on Sunday. The Northern Irishman revealed he has been nursing a hamstring issue and is facing “three to four weeks” on the sidelines.
Monday’s 2-0 victory against John Carver’s men moved Liverpool four points off the top four with six games to go and Rodgers said his players were still fighting for Champions League qualification.
“We feel we have every chance,” he said. “Of course, we’re looking for other teams to slip up.
“I am sure there will be plenty of twists and turns to come.”
He added: “We’re going to fight until the very end. As we saw last year there can be a lot of changes.”
Liverpool are currently priced 1.57 in the match betting and the draw outcome is quoted 4.00. Aston Villa are available to back in the 90 minutes market at 6.00.
