Louis van Gaal has backed Wayne Rooney to help Manchester United win the FA Cup this season for the first time since 2004.

United face Arsenal in a sixth-round encounter on Monday evening, but have struggled in the earlier rounds of the competition against lower league opponents Yeovil Town, Cambridge United and Preston North End.

Manchester United, 4.00 to win the FA Cup outright and 12.00 to beat the Gunners 2-0, have not won the trophy since beating Millwall in the final 11 years ago, although they lost in the final to Arsenal a decade ago and to Chelsea in 2007.

Rooney, 2.50 to score at any time against Arsenal on Monday, played in both those losing finals, but has not clinched an FA Cup winners’ medal in his career, and van Gaal believes it is time for that record to come to an end.

When you compare coaches with one another titles are very important.

The Dutchman said: “I don’t know how Rooney will motivate the dressing room for the FA Cup but I think he shall do that because he is very motivated as a captain and a player and he wants to win a title and he has not won the FA Cup.

“And that is something that is missing. My first championship with Ajax was very important for me, it was also an emotional thing.

“When you win a title like the FA Cup, which in England is very important, when you fight for something and you get it, you are pleased. When you compare coaches with one another titles are very important.”
