Dutch central defender Ron Vlaar says he is now minded to stay at FA Cup finalists Aston Villa, having previously signalled that he could leave the club this summer.
The 30-year-old moved to Villa Park in the summer of 2012 from Feyenoord and has since been a focal point of a Villans side who have struggled to maintain their top-flight status.
In recent years we have had a few narrow escapes, but I feel that the future looks rosy.
However, Netherlands international stopper Vlaar now believes that better times are ahead for Villa, especially if they are able to defeat holders Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday.
Vlaar told De Telegraaf: “If we win the FA Cup and go instead of Arsenal into Europe, it’s a new challenge.
“It could be a reason to stay at Aston Villa, but maybe I renew my contract anyway because in the last few months a lot has changed for the better.
“Moreover, you shouldn’t underestimate how big a club Aston Villa is. In recent years we have had a few narrow escapes, but I feel that the future looks rosy.”
Meanwhile, Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood is confident that his side can cause a minor surprise and defeat the Gunners on Saturday.
He added: “The pressure will be on them, they’re looking to win a trophy. I’m sure the gaffer will have a game plan, we’ll stick to that and I’m sure it’ll do the job for us.
“We think we can win, we believe we can beat them. If people are saying we’re underdogs, we’ll relish that.”
Villa can be backed at 3.75 to lift the FA Cup, with the Gunners 1.30, while the Midlanders are 17.00 to triumph after a penalty shootout.
