Arsene Wenger says his Arsenal side will hope to make history in the FA Cup final, while admitting that they were fortunate to defeat Reading in the semi-finals.
The Gunners saw off their Championship opponents 2-1 after extra-time at Wembley, with an unfortunate goalkeeping error from the otherwise impressive Adam Federici proving decisive.
If we can beat the record we will be very happy.
And that gives holders Arsenal an opportunity to win the FA Cup for a record 12th time next month, with the winners of the second semi-final between Aston Villa and Liverpool providing the final hurdle.
“If we can beat the record we will be very happy. Let’s hope we have all of our players available and come back in good shape,” Wenger said after a nervy day at Wembley.
“When you are in the final you can win it. We will prepare well, finish well in the league and then come back here and do all we can to win it.
“We all want a trophy. It is difficult to deliver, but all you want is the attitude.”
Meanwhile, Wenger praised the spirit and determination of the Royals, who made life uncomfortable for the Gunners for much of the 120 minutes on Saturday.
The Frenchman added: “It was a difficult game against a well-organised, resilient, committed and physically strong Reading team.
“They really wanted it, they were willing to die on the pitch to go to the final and you have to congratulate them for the effort they put in.
“What was missing was a bit of speed of combination and sharpness in the final third maybe, but overall the concentration was there.”
Aston Villa are 3.50 to reach the FA Cup final at the expense of Liverpool, with the Reds 1.28.
