In-demand midfielder Ilkay Gundogan looks likely to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, after the club confirmed that he has rejected a new contract.
The 24-year-old Germany international, who has been heavily linked with a move to England, is under contract until the summer of 2016, but Dortmund may now have to sell or risk losing the player for nothing in just over 12 months.
Gundogan has been with Dortmund since the summer of 2011, having joined from Nurnberg, and was part of the team who won the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal in his first season with the club.
He was also a key figure in their progress in the 2013 Champions League and scored in the final at Wembley, which was won 2-1 by German rivals Bayern Munich.
BVB confirmed the news about Gundogan by tweeting: “Borussia Dortmund and midfielder @Guendogan8 will not work together beyond June 30, 2016. @Guendogan8 has decided not to renew his contract beyond this time.”
Meanwhile, Dortmund duo Kevin Grosskreutz and Nuri Sahin are facing a race against time to feature again this season.
Wing-back Grosskreutz has been ruled out for around four weeks after undergoing a minor operation on his knee and while he is unlikely to play in the Bundesliga again this term, he may recover to feature in the DFB-Pokal final against Wolfsburg at the end of May.
Meanwhile, midfielder Sahin has undergone further tests to see when he will be back in action, having been on the sidelines since the end of February due to an adductor muscle problem.
Dortmund can be backed at 1.80 to win the DFB-POkal this season, with Wolfsburg 2.00, while Germany are 4.00 to triumph at Euro 2016.
