Veteran defender and captain Philipp Lahm has said he does not think Bayern Munich will sign Manchester United winger Angel di Maria this summer.
The Argentina international and club-record signing has emerged as a top target for a number of leading European clubs off the back of a disappointing debut season in England in which he scored only three Premier League goals.
“I don’t know if he is a candidate. I don’t know where he will go to or if he will stay. He costs a huge amount of money. There are so many factors like salary and whatever.”
Germany’s World Cup-winning captain Lahm said he doubted whether the Bundesliga champions had the financial muscle to bring in former Real Madrid star di Maria.
“I don’t know if he is a candidate. I don’t know where he will go to or if he will stay,” Lahm told reporters.
“He costs a huge amount of money. There are so many factors like salary and whatever.
“There are many other people in our club who know more about that topic than me.”
Allianz-Arena coach Pep Guardiola has already recruited Douglas Costa, Sven Ulreich and Joshua Kimmich this summer, while Lahm’s senior team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger has emerged as a target for former Bayern manager Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.
The Bavarians will next season bid to become the first German side to win a fourth straight Bundesliga title and when asked what they need to be successful again, Lahm added: “Nothing. The team has shown that it can compete well in all competitions.
“Last year we had a lot of problems with injuries. If all would have been fit our chances would have been better in every competition.
“Nevertheless – like I said five years ago – Bayern always has to have an eye on the market, how can we bring the team forward? But the team we have is completely competitive. We have shown that during the recent years.”
Bayern Munich are currently priced 1.10 to win next season’s Bundesliga and quoted 6.00 in the Champions League outright betting.
