Monday Night Football Tips: Kaiserslautern and Fiorentina to prosper

Kaiserslautern v RB Leipzig
Monday, 19:15
Live on BT Sport 2

Match Odds: Kaiserslautern [1.72], RB Leipzig [6.2], The Draw [3.85]

German football fans haven’t been shy about the fact that they don’t want the Red Bull-backed RB Leipzig joining Wolfsburg (Volkswagen) and Leverkusen (Bayer) as the third corporation-owned club in the Bundesliga.

A run of one win and just three goals scored in eight games between late November and February pointed to a victory for the “Nein zu RB” (No to RB) brigade, but the upstarts have given themselves a slim shot at promotion with three wins in four.

The gap to the play-off place (third) is seven points with six to play, though this clash with the team in possession presents a chance to make it a more manageable four points with five fixtures left.

Their problem is that Kaiserslautern haven’t been conquered at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion since February 2014 and, even more impressively, are on a six-match winning streak there.

Second-placed Darmstadt’s home draw with Heidenheim on Sunday means that Kaiserslautern will climb three points clear in the final automatic promotion if triumphant so, cheered on by most of the nation, expect the hosts to effectively kill off RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga hopes to further their own.

Fiorentina v Verona
Monday, 20:45
Live on BT Sport 1

Match Odds: Fiorentina [1.49], Verona [8.0], The Draw [4.7]

If Fiorentina were tempted to give up on a top-three finish following last week’s heavy loss to Napoli, the weekend’s events should have persuaded them otherwise.

Roma were held by 17th-placed Atalanta in Rome to extend their wretched post-Epiphany (January 6) record to three Serie A victories in 14, while Lazio surrendered the momentum of their eight-match league winning sequence with defeat at Juventus.

The Viola are nine points behind both capital clubs, yet that gap will be six with seven encounters remaining if they prevail in what is their first of five home collisions with bottom-eight sides between now and the close of the campaign. Indeed, they only have one meeting with a top-half rival left.

Verona will be glad to put another such contest behind them given how difficult they have found visiting the elite this season. They have lost all five trips to top-six teams across all competitions to date, leaking 20 times in the process and trailing within six minutes in the most recent three.
