Carlo Ancelotti has turned down the chance to return to AC Milan so that he can take a break from football.

The 55-year-old, who coached the Rossoneri between 2001 and 2009, left Real Madrid last month after his side failed to win La Liga and were beaten by Juventus in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Ancelotti led Real Madrid to their tenth European Cup triumph 12 months ago, having coached Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain after leaving the San Siro.

It was hard to say no to such beloved club to me but I need some rest.

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani had been keen to lure Ancelotti back to Milan but he insists he wants to take a long rest before deciding on his next project.

“Thanks to @acmilan for their support interest. It was hard to say no to such beloved club to me but I need some rest. I wish them the best,” he wrote.

Current Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi is under contract with the club until June 2016.

Under their former striker’s guidance, Milan finished tenth in Serie A in the season just ended.

Real Madrid are 2.50 to win the Spain Primera Liga 2015/16 outright, while Barcelona can be backed at 1.80.
