Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has made the Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer his first signing of the summer.

The 22-year-old central defender moves to White Hart from Cologne for an undisclosed transfer fee on a five-year deal.

Wimmer has spent the last three seasons with Cologne following his arrival from LASK Linz and made 72 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

“Kevin’s gone on to become a regular in the Cologne defence, as they earned promotion to the German top-flight,” a statement on the Spurs website said. “He was a standout performer in their first season back in the Bundesliga.”

Meanwhile, DeAndre Yedlin says he is enjoying Spurs’ post-season tour and can’t wait to play against Sydney FC this weekend.

The 21-year-old US international featured in the midweek victory against a Malaysia XI, and said: “I haven’t been to Sydney before but I’ve heard it’s great and that certainly looks right based on my first impressions.

“I’m looking forward to the support that we’ll get from the fans at Saturday’s match and hopefully we’ll give them a good game. It was tough to play in the humidity we encountered in Malaysia but I thought I did OK in the game and it was a great experience there.”

Spurs are 1.44 to beat Sydney while a victory for the A-League side can be backed at 6.00.
